It tis Friday and the beginning of a weekend...what we all live for. We are on duty this weekend and BIG Sherm has a basketball game tomorrow. He is going to KICK some bballcourt ass!! Well his team will try!

It's still snowing and cold. Wish it warm up. Summi has it made...warm weather and t-shirt weather. She starts racing next weekend and she has been training hard. It will be interesting to see how they do overall this season. They ended last fall taking the Southern Florida Conference. Here is a link to their webpage: Barry Rowing! .

Sorry for not posting in a while...but the Cycling season starts this weekend for Wenti and next Summerlin's racing season starts. So for all those who thought hmmmmm...where has Wentworth been with racing ...it starts this weekend in South Carolina.

Summerlin will be in Deland, FL racing sprints.

Will keep you all posted with pics and results as they come in.

Well one other thing that happened is as follows...Wentworth entered a contest...a hot dog eating contest that was put on by his school for the grand opening of a new building on campus...well needless to say the boy knows how to put the food down the hatch...he won the contest and won a cool HOT DOG hat.

I think he said he downed 9 dogs in three minutes....rolls and all!

This weekend was jam packed with family and racing. Sherm and I headed to Boston for the weekend to meet up with Summi and her team. They arrived from Miami around 11:30ish on Saturday to race the Head of the Charles on Sunday. It was great seeing Sum and Steve P also met up with us. He helped alot with navigating into and around Harvard Square. Summi wore Steve P's late fathers Harvard ring for the race because it was the anniversary of his death. It meant alot to Mrs. P. We then zoooooomed to my brother's house where we would stay Saturday night and I got to spend a little quality time with the Chunka Lunka..who is not so Chunky now:

The end of Track Nationals brought a spot on the podium. The LMC team ended up third in Division I. That is really good for them cause they beat-out Fort Lewis, which now moves them back to the number 1 slot overall in the Division I Collegiate scene. Sorry faithful readers for not updating lately! I must say that with age time flies. My summer was very busy and just flew by. BIG Sherm is home (thank god) Summi is back at school :o( and Wentworth is back in the BE. Another school year has started for some and about to start for the rest of us. I just booked my trip to Collegiate Track Nats in Colorado. That should be fun have not seen Went since April...so that will be fun. I hope to have some great pictures from that trip. I have another decision to make...My Mazda's lease is coming to an end. The last payment has been made and I need to decide whether to send it back or buy it. It is in great shape..however the Mazda USA had told me that my payment would probably go up. So I am thinking that I am going to send it back .... :o( kind of sad it is really a nice car. The good part of this move is that I will be car payment free. My BMW is paid for and I still have that to get around in. I have been looking at other options...VW...Minis...BMWs and not sure at this point which way I will go. The good thing is I don't need to rush. I just need to make sure to deliver my Mazda by September 21 to the local dealership.

Berkshire's student athletes arrive tomorrow. Our dorm will become noisy again. Sherm starts another class at UMass Amherst tomorrow. He will be taking Ancient Women Writers...of course All in FRENCH. He will be driving to class every Tuesday from 4 - 6:30 until December 12th. He is doing this so he will not have to be away for the next 3 summers to finish his Masters. Thank god!! If this all works out and he takes a course next fall he will only have to do 2 more summers away. He will miss only 2 of my birthdays....

For the time being...BIG Sherm is working on his syllabi's for his classes that he will start teaching a week from today. And while he is working on that of course in the background he is watching the US Open. One day I should get tickets for him to go and watch a match live...he would LOVE that!!

Now as far as Politics....what a history making election this will be. Obama vs McCain...and well I would love to hear what my readers have to say of which way I should vote...convince me!! I am reading and watching ...and am on the fence.

So now I think you have an idea of what is going on...I think it's time for me to move over to the couch for a lil foot massage from Sherm...so until the next time.....check back often!

This is the start of the last week for Summer Portals. Been real busy. 65 hour work week one week....60 for another....and this week will probably be the same. Summi and I have started our "girls rule" time with Sherm gone to Middlebury for 6 weeks....getting his MASTERS! So...Chester...and I are like the blind leading the blind. Poor dog can't hear a thing...so I have to go with him to make sure that no cars come close to him cause he would NEVER hear them coming. Summi also has a new man in her life. He is coming to visit the end of July so that will break up the weeks. Went had a really bad crash too. His bike was totaled. He made a trip to the ER cause they thought he had a broken arm. The good news is that nothing was broken..a little road rash and burns and no more bike. He seems to be doing well in CANADA. Everytime we talk he has a tale to tell. My birthday came and went...nothing to earth shattering! Just another year to tally.

Well I should hit the hay...and get a good nights sleep for the upcoming week. Hopefully I can update sooner rather then later. OUT!

Ontario's best track cyclists will be converging on the Forest City Velodrome this weekend, to compete in the 2008 Ontario Track Championships. Events kick off at 5pm on Saturday May 31st. Racing on Sunday begins at 9am with the 5 event Omnium. Racing will continue throughout the day, with an awards presentation planned for just after 5pm on Sunday afternoon.

Adult admission is $10.00, Seniors only $5.00, Kids are always "FREE". You will not want to miss the excitement this weekend at the FCV.

Race day registration is available at the track.

Worry, think too much, analyze, love, and wish they could soften blows...by this I mean I wish there was a way I could take all the pain for my children. I would be willing to do that so that I could see them smiling, laughing all the time...hear the joy in their voices when they call me or see them beam with excitement. The hardest thing to see or hear as a mother is hurting, disappointment, failure. I would take all that pain...cause as a mom I know that things get better, things change, the future holds better things. But how do you express that to your children in the times of pain and hurt? I know they have to live and learn but I had no idea that when they hurt...I would hurt too, just as much as they do. I was not prepared for that. I guess...in my own way I am feeling the pain too...but I want to take it all away...for them. Please know that it will get better. It will. Your mom promises. You will laugh, love and not hurt. Love is learning.

Well...sorry for being so lax on my posting. Been real busy with work and all. I have not put in a 40 hour week in some time now. I go home exhausted each day...and BIG Sherm is a trooper cause he picks up the slack. That is the great thing about finding your soul mate....they are always there for you even when the going gets tough. BIG Sherm is just as dedicated as I am it's just right now he seems to be putting the most work in!!! I hope when both of my kids settle down, it is with someone that is forever and never thinks differently...cause that sure does take a lot of hassle out of life in general.

Went is in CANADA safe and sound and Coach Chris is taking good care of him. I wish he was closer so I could just give him a hug right now cause he really could use one. Please visit his blog and give him words of encouragement...he really needs a picker upper right now.

Summi is still in FLORIDA and she is flying home on June 2. Can't wait for her to be home. Hopefully she will have no grumpies when she gets here.

BIG Sherm is leaving at the end of next month for a six week session in Middlebury, VT to work on his MASTERS. Blah Blah Blah...in french of course. I don't know what I will do with out him around. I guess that is when it is an eyeopener...and you really appreciate the one you love...when they are not there.

Well I need to get back to work...until next time.

Got up early and fixed a nice pot of French Roast and a lil oatmeal. Had a blueberry muffin to go with it. Got dressed and Summi showed up. She was in her usual morning fog. Then went down to the second floor where breakfast was being served and BIG Sherm and I sat in front of the BIG screen tv to watch the news while the team had breakfast. Here is a pic of Summi and her game day face: Then Summi and Becca came over to hang out after having some nourishment: We finally headed out to the race...We separated from the team cause Summi was freaking out....so BIG Sherm and I had our own adventure...and we have fun when we do our own thing. Look what we found: I want a peepmobile. Then we headed in the direction to see if we could watch the team from a far. We found them at the launch getting ready to head out..... a little video of them rowing away....

Sherm and I headed back toward where the finish line is and waited. They were suppose to race at 10:45 but did not come down through until 11:20ish. All and all they finished right where there coach had wanted them to finish. It was pouring and windy...Summi said that she finally warmed up on the final sprint. Their time was 6:56 and they were really happy with the turn out. Ended up third. We headed back to the hotel and Summi showered in our shower. Had a little lunch and then we all napped. Tomorrow is another day...however race in the morning and them finals in the afternoon. We will head out after the last race tomorrow.

Dad Vails Regatta.

Staying in a really nice place a little ride from he race. Our ride down was not really to adventurous...except BIG Sherm forgot our food for our room so we drove back from Hotchkiss to retrieve it....Wanted to leave at 12:30...but really left at 1:30. Surprised Summi...she did not expect us until 8:30ish...and Sherm was carrying the box of food up to the 5th floor and low and behold Summi was coming down the hall and totally did not recognize Sherm...her team mates giggled.....and she looked and freaked out.

I packed a nice bottle of wine...made a pasta dinner had some nice red wine and now am feeling kind of warm and fuzzy...well check out the pics.

Yes..we did indeed make it home after a very long weekend of racing. Went rode really hard for the team. The team had a good placing with taking all the points for the South East Conference Championship. We hit the road around 3:00 p.m. to come back home and arrived in Massachusetts at 3:30 a.m. Climbed into bed for a couple hours of sleep and then up to go to work at 6:30 a.m. Was really tired most of the day. The one thing that we did not plan well is that we were on duty Monday night ...made for a really long day on Monday.

All in all it all went well.

Summi had another 2nd place finish this weekend. Her team just has not found the umph to beat Nova. They hopefully will bring them down at Dad Vails ....where it will really count!!! They are just seconds away from dominating. They have a couple of weeks to work on a plan.

We go down to Philly on the 8th of May to watch Summi race. I will have some pictures to share from that adventure too. I hope she does well cause she has worked very hard and really wants to get a bid to Nationals.

Well we are on duty and things are starting to get a little loud out in the dorm. I need to sit back and chill ...keep checking for some exciting news...outtie.

Rowing Report:

First Race: Barry finished 2nd with a time of 7:31. Their boat had the 3rd fastest time. They qualified for the Semis.

Second Race: Barry finished 2nd again with a time of 6:47. They once again had the 3rd fastest time. They have qualified for the Grands. They race again tomorrow around noonish.

Well we arrived finally around 6:00ish p.m. Toward the end of the trip the Condrons and the Caldwells were getting pretty punchy. But did indeed finally arrive.

As per usual we arrived and Went greeted us...however he had some very bad news. Went and his Time Trial Bike, that he needs for his first race this morning well....let me show you.

The good news is that he is okay...little road rash on his right elbow and bruised rib. VERY LUCKY!

After unpacking the car Went took us to Willey's (school snack bar) for some dinner. And then we met up with Iron MIKE..YEAH...and Kristi. Kristi drove us with IRON Mike and Went to check out the NEW Crit course. REALLY hairy. After that we went to the new coffee shop in town to get a little warm beverage. Pics from there:

Headed south to North Carolina tomorrow at 4:30 a.m...yes a.m. Riding down with the Condrons...and have rented a car....check it out.

It's going to be fun...but tiring!! 1600 miles/12 hours.

Miss Summi is on a jet plane currently headed to SIRA Championships in Oakridge, TN. She races twice on Saturday and once on Sunday. She flies back to Florida on Sunday.

I will have our laptop with us and will give updates on how everyone is doing. We will be probably leave on Sunday early afternoon to make it back so we can get a little sleep before work and teaching on Monday!! Sherm will take tons of pictures and will post them each evening!

So the next update will be from Banner Elk, NC. Here is a link to the video cam on main street if you watch starting around 1:00 p.m. you might catch the Crit. Click here to watch the LMC cycling team kick some ass Saturday afternoon!!! That is a view of the main drag and one lane is shut down for the race...each race will do many laps. Well...not sure if I have mentioned this or not..BIG Sherm and I had bought tickets to fly down to see Went's home race. The airline....SKYBUS. Well read this:

Skybus Airlines will cease all operations effective Saturday, April 5.

So this last week I have been on the phone with my credit card company trying to get my $$$ back. And I even had the travel insurance and found out "Sorry we don't cover if an airline goes bankrupt". Now we are driving down...damn 12 hours in the car with Sean Condron's parents. To try and save we are sleeping in Went's room...BOYS dorm. We shall see what happens with this...We are planning to start our trip at 5:00 a.m. Friday. Returning Sunday and starting around 2:00 p.m. And I was really looking forward to flying and not having that "I've been in the car 12 hours feeling".

Our summer program in Lakeville, CT is looking for young college men to be Residential Fellows. This would be from June 20th to July 14th. Summi will be traveling to Tampa this weekend for two days of racing. It will be interesting to see how all the hard training that they have doing pans out. Will keep you posted on that end.

Went travels to Clemson this weekend. I think he said that the team races on Saturday.

Both kids will travel on Friday.

Well....need to get rolling....lots of work and things to tend to. Out like a hot potato.

Yes I know I have not updated in a few days....Well working and working and working. Heard from my "brother from another mother"...everything with him is going well!! He drives a 6 series BMW convertible...I am going to try and get him to send me a picture of it so I can put it up on my blog. And I will put a picture of my BMW too!!

Went is off to Vanderbilt to race this weekend..he should be loading up as I write this. He sounds like everything is going well with him...just really busy. He secured our postcard and poster job for Summer Portals!! He is having a birthday on April 14th so make sure to give him a shout out!!! BIG 22!

Summi is practicing like crazy getting ready to head to Tampa for some racing next weekend. I just booked my room in Philly to watch her race on May 9th and 10th!! I can't wait to see her and watch the team compete. If anyone has nothing going on that weekend ..come on down!! Gonna do some tailgating!

BIG SHERM is stressing he has an extra class for this whole month...and hate to say it that fifth class is impeding on my foot rubs every night...cause he has to correct homework and quizzes......damn teaching.

Next Thursday, April 10th Luke Winger is coming to visit from Lees-McRae to do a little recruiting and racing himself. Should be fun!!

So on the most part everything is going well just really busy...so I need to stop, my lunch break is over and I need to get back to work....Have a GREAT weekend and till we meet again!

I was talking to a cycling friend today and telling him how my riding had been going and happened to mention an accident I was in while riding a couple of weeks ago. He laughed and said he was just reading a similar story and showed me the birdman case. I found it very interesting and it left me with questions about my incident. So here goes my story.

A group of five cyclists were riding outside Banner Elk, North Carolina. If you don't know where it is, it is in the mountains of North Carolina close to Tennessee. The town is a tourist ski and college town but the locals are pretty country. It is also where the famous Beach Mountain climb starts. Anyway we were riding single file on the far right side up one of the busier roads that takes you back into town. There was no oncoming traffic and we were just minding our own business out on a training ride, when all of a sudden a large Ford truck came flying by and buzzed all five of us without slowing down at all.

We were all mad and all of us yelled, one raised his arms and I flipped the bird. The man sees this in his mirror and locks up the brakes and skids sideways to a stop in the middle of the road, blocking both lanes. The truck is about 50 feet away from us, and we stop, not knowing what he is going to do. He opens the door and gets out of the truck yelling "have y’all got something to say" and "have y’all got a problem."

He then started walking towards us while yelling at us and we then saw that he was carrying a handgun. He waved the gun around making sure we see it when he first yelled at us, but after a bit he tucked it in the back of his pants. When he got to us he started saying how he had four kids in the car and was not going to pull in the other lane (which was clear) and endanger them (saying this while the truck was blocking traffic after a curve in the road and cars had to slam on their brakes to keep from hitting his truck). He then went on about how he has been a paramedic for 20 years and knew how to drive on these roads.

He then declared "you've messed with the wrong mo' fo’" and "I should lay y’all out right here and bury y’all on the side of the road". Then he looked at each of us and again asked "do you have a problem?" We said "no" and he finally walked away.

While all of this was going on I looked at the guy and realized that I had seen him before. I then realized that I had met him two days before and was supposed to observe his surgery in two days as part of my major in college.

As he pulled away I asked if any one got his tag number. One of the group did and he texted it to himself to remember it. We then rode to a safe pull off and called our coach (we are all members of the cycling team at Lees-McRae college) and asked what to do. He told us to ride on into town and go to the police station to see what we could do. We told the policeman what happened. I told him the guy’s name and the policeman ran the tags. They matched up. He said we could either go to the court house and press charges or the policeman could go talk to him.

We called our coach back to ask what he thought we should do. He told us to go home and think about it and he offered to check in with the athletic director and the college president and get their thoughts, too. We decided to press charges and everyone with the school agreed with us. We went to the court house and told the magistrate what happened. He told us that we could get the guy on five counts of communicating a threat and explained the process of what will happen. He added that while flipping him off wasn't the nicest thing to do, it is a form of protected speech and not illegal. We just found out that the court date has just been set for April and a warrant will be issued for his arrest tomorrow.

My questions are: were we wrong in our reactions to him? Are there other charges we could press? Do you agree with us going through and pressing charges?

Another Birdman

I remember riding through Banner Elk during the Tour DuPont in the early 90's. I was never mistaken for a climber, and by the time I finished, LeMond and Armstrong were probably reminiscing about their day at the office as the soigneurs fluidly coaxed the lactic acid out of their legs, preparing them for the next day's stage. But no complaints from me, it was epic duking it out in the sprints with the Euro’ studs like Steve Bauer, Sean Kelly and Phil Anderson.

The climb up Beech Mountain was so brutal that I had to ride in 'S' turns to make it up—no pride lost though, as there were plenty of big names from across the pond doing likewise. The trick was not to run into each other as we slithered up the grade.

Anyway, flipping the bird to a maniac is always legally justified, but it doesn't always pan out for the best, and ' poking a tiger' never makes sense.

In my Bicycling and the Law book tour/lectures, I call on all cyclists to do their part to defend our right to the road. Of course, you have to pick your battles, and you will lose police support if you go after drivers who are simply rude. Your harasser rings all the bells though—he made an unnecessarily dangerous pass that smacked of intimidation, escalated things when he slammed on his brakes and blocked the road, and he brandished a weapon as he threatened your lives.

If this guy isn't the poster child for bad drivers who should be held accountable, I don't know who is. So, yes, birdman, I think you are doing the right thing. If more cyclists took the time to hold law-breaking bike haters accountable, we could start improving road safety for all of us.

As far as additional charges, in North Carolina drivers are required to leave a minimum of two feet clearance when passing another vehicle. If Mr. “mo fo,” as he refers to himself, did not leave at least two feet between your bikes and his truck when he buzzed you, he can be prosecuted on that charge as well. It’s an infraction, which is less serious than the misdemeanor charge he is facing for communicating a threat, but it’s still a violation he should not be given a free “pass” on.

Well, Easter has come and gone...Jesus has risen...and life continues on.

Seems that the weather here is maybe starting to look alot like spring. But somehow I hesitate to speak to soon. Heard on the radio this morning on my drive in that we might be looking at snow. Arrrrrrrrrrggghhh....

BIG Sherm is starting up his last stretch of Parlez Vous Francais...or whatever...and I am trying to keep up with the applications that are rolling in for Summer Portals. We received 11 applications from South Africa yesterday!! Look like some really interesting kids too. All environmental scientists.

Summi's season is underway. They have had some very good results against some Division 1 schools.

Went is in the travel mode with his team too. They are at Auburn this coming weekend. That is a course that he truly loves. Preparations are underway for the travel to the LMC home race in April. That will be for Conference finals.

Well things are rolling and I am in need of doing a little work...so I will have a follow-up video or two...so stay tuned....out.

So first to note is that Wentworth headed to Dahlonega, GA for a collegiate race yesterday. Well that is about an hour north of Atlanta and I was waiting to hear if they made the trip okay (a lil worried because well with Brian Sheedy driving there is bound to be some sort of fiasco). Well as I was sitting in the living room Sherm asked me if I had heard from Went. And I told him "No", well he then went on to tell me about this freakin tornado that hit Atlanta and did some major damage....Thanks BIG Sherm...got the mom worried and wondering if they were okay. So...I texted Went and he did not answer. I decided to go to bed around 12:30ish...cause I was not going to hear from him. Slept like shit...and got up around 5:30ish...ended up texting Kristi, cause I knew that she was leaving at 5:30 for another race, to see if she had heard from him. She must have called Went, cause he finally called me, however, he was all pissey with me because I was worried and being ridiculous. Damn it's my job to worry...and I do a great job at it too! I can't wait till he is a parent!!!!! Anyway...after he cooled down a little he did tell me that it was a driving rain at the Time Trial course. Team Time Trial at 9:00 and then a Circuit race at 1:00 p.m. From what I hear both groups were happy with how things went in the Time Trial. It was pouring the whole time. Then I got a call from Wentworth around 2:00 and the Circuit Race was cancelled due to bad weather. Tornado warnings in their area. So they started their trek north. They plan on staying in Greenville, SC tonight then finish their trip to tomorrow's race in the a.m. Tornado warnings are still in effect until 7:00 p.m.....Went just called and is in a hotel for the night. Of course when he called he was making wind noises and yelling that he was in the eye of the tornado...and then the phone went dead. He really wasn't he was pranking me and trying to get me going and started the whole worry process again. DAMN you WENTWORTH..you totally get what you deserve when you do things like that to me.

On a happy note Summerlin raced at 8:00 this morning and her boat WON and beat Division 1 UCONN!! Wooooooooooooo Hoooooooooooo.....Props to COACH DAVE for getting them ready!! And also to the whole boat...that is really good. Summi said that the UCONN team was HUGE. They beat the UCONN team by 8 seconds. So...a great day for the SUM-SUM!!!! I am SO PROUD of her!!!

Sherm and I went to K-Mart and got a few things.....that is always an interesting trip...we have some real WEIRDOS in this area.

Well...I am going to sit back chill out put my feet up and probably fall asleep in my big chair while Sherm watches College Basketball...he looks like a little kid watching cartoons....

As March 10Th approaches..the day that all decisions go out. The Admission Office is under the gun. My old boss called Friday and asked if I would be willing to help out on Saturday. I did and got to work with the girls again. Nice bunch! BIG Sherm went in with me and watched the news on the big screen TV. I worked until noonish. On the way home Sherm and I went to the grocery store to buy some meat for the freezer. We have to cook for the next couple of weeks and I have to pack lunch too! Spring break brings my campus solitude and Berkshire's too. My current boss has gone to the Cape until Wednesday and then he heads to the sunshine state for a lil break. So after Christie, my coworker, leaves for Florida on Wednesday to, the whole office will be mine. I have a ton of work to do and I will be able to get it done without interruption.

Poor Wentworth is really sick ...I presume with the flu. He was up all night Friday throwing up and did not make the trip to South Carolina to race with the team. This all came about very short notice. I have been texting him to see how he is and have not heard from him...so I hope he is okay.

Summi has finished up a hard week of training. She has a day to relax before classes start again on Monday. All and all I think things are going okay with her.

Today I am going to try and figure out a few things so that Sherm and finish up our taxes and do a little house cleaning also!

Well...we missed Penn Station...of course Sherm or I had NO idea...the kids on the bus told the driver we went by Penn Station like 5 streets ago...so the driver pulled up to the curb and unloaded them right in the middle of the street...pretty strange...and this what was left:

Sherm got off and gave the kids pep talks and they immediately got on their cell phones and started calling their rides....

Then back on the bus and the driver asked where we wanted to go...well he wanted to stop and get "munchies". We drove and then he said he found the place he always stops, he pulled over and he and Sherm got off locked me in the bus and here is where I sat:

I thought they were going to this lil bakery and coffee shop...Sherm came back with a French Vanilla cappuccino and a hot chocolate with a pretty muffin and croissant....The driver came back with Reeses pieces...and a couple of packages of those orange crackers with orange cheese in the middle...So I asked Sherm if the bakery was nice...he laughed at me....and said "Honey, it was a BP gas station." The thing that got me was the driver had said this place is really nice ..but if you want to go to a MacDonald's I can stop at one......wow...BP...stop here, eat, and get gas....hmmmmmmmm.

Yes it is snowing again. The weather station is calling for a possible 12inches! We shall see, it started around 7:30pm and suppose to snow all night and into a good portion of tomorrow. Students in our dorm are cleaning their rooms to get ready for their departure for Spring break. Noisey out there they are really wound up! BIG Sherm is the chaperone for the NYC bus tomorrow too!! Wonder if it will leave if the weather is as bad as they claim it will be? He leaves @ 12:00is and then should be back at 7:00pm. Cookout tomorrow at the Sugar House too. Dogs and Burgers...this is the true start of spring break for the faculty. ALL STUDENTS are suppose to be gone by the afternoon. So that will lead to some major partying of the younger faculty. Sherm and I will just chill and relax. Students at Hotchkiss do not leave until next Wednesday. And I have some major glazing to do on mugs and bowls that I made in my ceramic class. So one evening Sherm and I will hang out at Hotchkiss so that I can get that work done and fired so I can give my mom and BIG Sherm their mugs that I made!! I will try and take some pictures of them the next time I go to work on them. Well I think I will take a lil break...Went is in a van headed to Athens, Georgia for racing tomorrow...and Summi is probably in bed she has practice very early tomorrow morning....so until I have more...Chow!
